Founded in Mumbai in 2026 by Sunaina Rajan, Gallery Maxima is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to the work of emerging and mid-career South Asian artists working in India and across the globe. The gallery works closely with artists at formative stages of their careers, supporting rigorous and evolving practices across painting, sculpture, textiles, craft, and new media.

Its programme foregrounds artists whose work engages with the materials, histories, landscapes, and lived realities of the region, while contributing to broader conversations within contemporary art. Through its exhibitions, Gallery Maxima seeks to create meaningful connections between artists, collectors, and audiences, fostering deeper engagement with contemporary art from South Asia.

Housed within Kitab Mahal, a historic building in Mumbai's Fort district, the gallery brings together the character of its architectural setting with the flexibility of a contemporary exhibition space, providing a platform for new perspectives from across South Asia and its diaspora.

The Space

Gallery Maxima occupies a 1,600 square foot exhibition space on the second floor of Kitab Mahal, a landmark Art Deco building constructed in 1890 in Mumbai's Fort district. The interior preserves the architectural character of the building, arched doorways, curved glass windows, stone flooring, crimson doors, and fifteen-foot ceilings, while integrating the functional requirements of a contemporary exhibition space.
